Update About the First Friday Stream!

Just as an update to Friday night’s stream, from what I was able to see of the archive footage, it appears that everything went 90% as planned. There are still some issues that have to be addressed, but I think its a go for anyone wanting to try this daring feat themselves.

  1. For Android users using Android 7.0+, make sure you have disabled your lockscreen. These versions of Android have a feature called “Doze Mode” which will start trickling data to your phone almost immediately after the phone goes to sleep even if your phone is plugged in. It will not cut off your stream, but it will start pushing frames to Twitch every few seconds instead of constantly. On my Nexus 6P running 7.0, there are no options in Settings to disable it unless you unlock the Developer Options and disabled it from there. iOS has these options available without any weird tricks (at least on iOS 9.3.4 and 10 beta).
  2. Make sure you have a wireless dongle or onboard wireless if you are using a desktop.
  3. Make sure you are able to get about 4Mbps up.
  4. BRING A CHARGER!!!!!! Obviously this will eat up any battery.
  5. Also, make sure you either have a truly unlimited data plan or you have enough data on your plan. A 720p stream for two hours uploading at ~4Mbps ate up ~6GB of my data plan.

Other than these things, everything went smoothly. I look forward to doing this again, just hopefully not with my phone again. It may be a wise investment to get a dedicated mobile hotspot.

Now, I know I may not be the first to do this and am farthest from an expert on this, but if you do have any questions, please let me know! If I don’t have the answer, I’d love to try and figure it out because this has been a fun experiment and experience!

You can catch the actual First Friday stream here!
